Computer history | The Start of Modern Computing (2023)

You want to know how modern computer came to be? Here’s a concise easy to understand computer history preamble.

The Complete Computer history from Ancient Times to the Present Day

Introduction: A Brief Computer History – A Look Into The Beginnings of Modern Computing and the inventors.

In 1946, John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry designed the first prototype of a digital computer at Iowa State College. It was called the ABC machine.
In 1948, George Stibitz used a modified version of this machine to perform the first calculation on an electronic computer. He then went on to build another prototype known as SWAC (Stibitz Wire-O-Cipher) that could solve systems of linear equations.

What is a Computer?

The topic of what is a computer and why should we care, is one that I have been pondering for years. Why is it that so many people have absolutely no clue what a computer really is? How can they know the word computer but not understand what it really means? And why are these people so fascinated with computers?

A computer is an electronic device that processes information electronically. The information can be processed by the computer or by a human who uses the computer to interpret data or create something new. While this definition may seem complicated, you don’t need to understand it to see how computers are working.

A computer can also said to be a device that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically via computer programming.

Computer systems that can run programmed instructions are called computers. These systems are used as control systems for a very wide variety of industrial and consumer devices.

Without a doubt, the invention of computers is one of the most impactful inventions ever since its birth.
Inventor: It was Charles Babbage who first conceived the idea of a computing machine in 1822. He worked on this idea for a long time and finally presented his “analytical engine” in 1837. However, it was not until 1941 that “The Harvard Mark I” became operational and it was the world’s first computer to do so.

Inventor: In 1945, J. Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly invented ENIAC which stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer. This machine took up an entire room and weighed 30 tons but could calculate over 5000 times faster than any other machine at that time.

Early Computer Systems – Gears, Levers, and Vacuum Tubes

The first computer system was developed in the 1950s. This machine combined gears, levers, and vacuum tubes to solve the problem of people needing to calculate rocket trajectories.

Vacuum tubes were first introduced to computers in the 1920s. The vacuum tube was used as an early form of a digital circuit that could manipulate electronic signals. This innovation made it possible for computers to calculate mathematical problems many times faster than any previous machines.
